OKASA

Oklahoma Adaptive Sports Association led by Bethany Children’s Health Center

Our mission is to develop, sponsor, and promote recreational and competitive athletic opportunities for individuals with physical challenges.

Events

Join us for a Sitting Volleyball Clinic, a dynamic event designed for individuals with physical disabilities and amputees. Discover the exhilarating world of sitting volleyball, where participants move or scoot on the floor using upper body strength. For more information, download the flyer here.

Join us for our annual wheelchair basketball game! This exciting matchup between the OKC Wheels of Thunder vs. metro area physicians and healthcare organizations will raise funds and awareness to help with the advancement of adaptive sports opportunities in Oklahoma.

The game will be held Thursday, April 18th, 2024, at 5:30 pm at the Bishop McGuiness Catholic High School Gymnasium and includes a silent auction featuring a wide variety of items.

Programs

OKASA offers programs for children, teens and adults with physical disabilities. Veterans with physical disabilities are welcome to join our teams in any sport we offer.

  • Swimming + Water Sports

Swimming is an excellent sport and activity for people of all ages and abilities. Even though someone may be disabled, that does not mean they cannot swim.

We offer swimming as an option for our athletes. We practice at Downtown YMCA on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, starting in May. We have a learn to swim program, as well as a competitive program.

Water Sports include water skiing, sailing, canoeing, kayaking and tubing.

  • Tennis

Tennis provides an exciting opportunity to get outside, connect with others, and engage in friendly competition in a positive, fun environment! The tennis community is wonderful as it is open to any age and ability level and is a socially engaging way to get out and get some exercise.

    Who Can Play?
Anyone with a disability that would prevent them from participating in “stand-up” tennis is a candidate for tennis through OKASA.. Amputees are welcome. We’re happy to have you!

  • Track + Field

Track and Field (aka Athletics) has been part of the Paralympic Games since 1960 and events are open to male and female athletes in all disability groups.

Advances in technology and athletes’ dedication to the sport have made once unimaginable feats become realities. Some compete in wheelchairs, others with prostheses, and athletes with blindness/visual impairment compete with the guidance of a sighted guide.

OKASA is a co-sponsor in the Endeavor Games with UCO.

Athletes compete according to their functional classifications in each event. These events are continually being redefined to include as many athletes as possible. Athletics include:

    • Track Events: Sprint (20m. 60m, 100m, 200m, 400m), Middle Distance (800m, 1500m), Long Distance (5,000m, 10,000m), and Relay Races (4x100m, 4x400m)
    • Road Events: OKASA has several athletes that participate in road racing events including marathons. We ask that you join us at practice and learn the correct form from our track coach. We request that athletes representing OKASA wear a shirt with our logo or name on it.
    • Jumping Events: High Jump, Long Jump, Triple Jump
    • Throwing Events: Club, Discus, Shot Put, Javelin
    • Combined Events: Pentathlon (track and road events, jumping events and throwing events, depending on the athletes’ classification)
